Do We Really Need 76 Teams in March?
It’s getting a bit silly no? MORE – MORE – MORE!
More teams is the answer. More Games. More Teams. More Players – MOREEE!
Is more always better? You could argue that more is worse at this point. Do we really need 4 more play-in games, so we can coddle 8 more teams, and claim they ‘Made the Tourny!” just so they can play more meaningless games on Tuesday night on TBS+ or TruTV.com streaming?
First round games usually suck anyway. Maybe a 9 beats an 8 seed but it’s becoming watered-down crap. The question is when does it end? Why not 100? Why not 110? Why not every team over .500 makes it and we have March Madness literally last the entire month?
They are making the tournament bigger, but the magic that made it great is already gone. Especially now with NIL that cherry picks any decent player into Power 5 teams, from small market teams. These cinderella story teams no longer exist. Gordon Hayward on Butler does not exist anymore. He would have transferred to Kentucky his 2nd year after playing well for one season on Butler.
George Mason of 2006 does not exist anymore. Small market teams cannot retain star players or even a core of 5 guys who play together for 4 years and actually develop chemistry. Not happening in NIL world. No shot.
So adding 8 more Dump teams does no good for the tournament. All it does is appease streaming/TV networks to sell more ads and game slots. Next year the opening play-in games are going to be on Tubi/Fubo/Amazon/Apple and TruTV streaming on Rumble.
Good luck watching that. Good luck caring about that.
